Selecting an illustrator for a character I have spent years conjuring up was always going to be a gargantuan task. What style did I want, modern or classic? Did I want a minimalist look or lots of colour? All you need to do is take a walk through the children’s aisle of your local bookstore to see the varied styles of children’s books but when I saw the work of Emma Stuart, I knew.
Classic. Old school. Colourful. Emma Stuart was my gal. But would she do it? After all, she worked with the likes of Enid Blyton and has been published many, many times. Would she take a chance on a first-time author?
Luckily for me, Emma believed in Marley as much as I did and here we are, about to see him come to life for the first of hopefully many incredible tales.
